Russ Pawlas, beloved band director at Brookville Middle School and former longtime director at E.C. Glass High School and Altavista Combined School, has passed away. His loss is being deeply felt across the music and education communities he served for so many years. Those who knew him describe Russ as one of the truly good ones.
Russ was more than a teacher—he was a mentor, a best friend, and for many, a father figure during their school years. He had an extraordinary ability to brighten any room he entered, offering kindness, humor, and unwavering support. Students remember him as the type of friend and guide everyone hopes to have during their formative years. The impact he made simply cannot be captured in words.
He didn’t just teach music; he invested in people. Russ encouraged his students, helped them prepare for auditions, guided them through music school applications, wrote thoughtful recommendations, and always made time to listen. His mentorship extended far beyond the classroom, continuing long after the final concert had ended. His influence will live on through the countless lives he shaped, and many hope that his passion for music and life will continue to inspire others.
The Brookville High School Bands also shared a heartfelt tribute on social media:
“Our hearts are broken. The Brookville Band Family lost a very special director, mentor, and friend. Mr. Pawlas has only been with the Brookville Band for two years.
